A Modest Proposal
Hearing loss prevention has been near the top of the AES agenda for some time, and the proliferating number of audio and multimedia educational facilities out there have also made a raised awareness of the problem of hearing loss as part of their curricula, even if it's on an ad hoc basis. (Let's face it: asking audio engineering students to attend a formal class on hearing loss would be like asking medical students to attend a class on embalming.)
But since the schools are growing in numbers, as are their student populations, I'd like to reach out to them this month and ask them to put the issue of another type of loss that of equipment on their informal schedules. A typical course of study runs about nine months at many academic institutions. If, in that period, on one day, for one hour, someone in the security field came in and explained to them the importance of insurance, logging equipment serial numbers, and establishing basic personal security guidelines and practices, it could save many of them some serious problems later on in their careers. Habits, good and bad, take root better when they're started early.
So I hope the school administrations see this (I know a few of you have posted some stolen equipment on the site in the past) and take a shot at implementing it. If you need help, let me know. I'll find someone from a police precinct or an insurance company in your area who'll be willing to address students.
